Alternative Ways of Living: a Documentary

My passion for filmmaking began while studying Fashion Design at Ravensbourne University. Through collaborating with film students and creatives across different disciplines, I naturally began approaching every project with a cinematic perspective — designing not just garments, but worlds, characters, and stories.

I have always been fascinated by the way people live and the environments they create around themselves. During my second year at university, I moved to Antwerp, Belgium, where I worked as a Design Assistant for AF Vandevorst. While living there, I stayed in a converted warehouse space designed for artists called Live Art. The experience, and the people I met there, inspired me to explore alternative ways of living and thinking creatively outside conventional structures.

This curiosity led me towards documentary filmmaking and research surrounding overconsumption, sustainability, and unconventional living spaces. I became particularly interested in individuals creating homes from reclaimed or unexpected materials — including a houseboat owner in Shoreham who built floating homes using collected objects such as buses and airplane wings, many of which are now available as Airbnb stays. I also met innovators within the Tiny Home movement, designing expandable living spaces that challenge ideas around scale, ownership, and modern living.

For my dissertation documentary, I explored how people can live differently and more consciously through design. I returned to Belgium to interview An Vandevorst about her perspectives on sustainability and adapting creative practice within fashion, as well as reconnecting with Joost, the founder of Live Art, whose philosophy first inspired my interest in alternative living and storytelling through real environments and people.
